Trennbares Verben Separable Verbs

German has two categories of prefixes: inseparable prefixes and separable prefixes.

Untrennbar – Inseparable Prefixes

These prefixes are always attached to the front end of a verb and are never removed  from it no matter the tense or form of the verb.
The verbs with the following prefixes are Inseparable    be -, emp -, ent -, er -, ge -, miss -,ver -, zer –
Ich verstehe nicht, was Sie meinen. I don’t follow your meaning.
Ich erwarte Ihre Antwort. I await your reply.

All of the separable -prefix verbs form their past participle with ge -. Examples: Sie  hat gestern angerufen.    Trennbar – Separable Prefixes

These prefixes change the meaning of the original verb, and make a new word. In  the present tense, separable prefixes are separated from the verb and placed at the  end of the sentence bracket.

The separation rule also applies in the imperative.
When used in the infinitive.    The verbs with the following prefixes are separable:    ab -, an -, auf -, aus -, bei -, ein -, los -, mit -, nach -, her -, hin -, vor -, weg -, zu -,  zurück

Ich rufe dich an. I’ll give you a call.
Ich lade dich ein! I’ll treat you!

All of the separable -prefix verbs form the past participle with ge -, with the prefix  located in front of and attached to the past participle.
For Example: (Ich habe
meine Freundin angerufen.)    Their past participles do not use “ge” – for example (Ich habe es vergessen).
